Religion or Indoctrination?!

What it is about religion that makes people so insufferable? What is this whole superiority demeanor that causes one to think they are better than the next person by virtue of their association to particular set of beliefs- because that is really what religion is! A set of beliefs: dos and don’ts if you please. Regulations that a group of people with shared beliefs put in place to govern behavior and determine/dictate the acceptable response of individuals to the stimuli in their environment! I present to you that religion is based on mankind’s interpretation of life. I know you expected me to say mankind’s interpretation of God… More often than not, religion starts as a quest to get to know God but it has been proven to quickly morph into a godless entity of humans trying to control each other. God has faded into a word used to scare people from indulging in whatever is outside of the set rules. In my observation, I have come to the realization that most r...

My God is Love!

I was having this interesting conversation cum argument with one of my colleagues about this whole ‘religion’ thing. He thinks I believe too much in the existence of a God who is really my optimism. In other words, I’m optimistic so I believe in a loving, all knowing, all sufficient God who in his argument is really my optimism. You gotta love this guy!- I know I do! I meet too many people who agree with my set of beliefs that I find myself intrigued when I find someone that does not. And no, I don’t judge his decision to reject God. Neither do I make him seem unserious for not agreeing with what I believe. This constant discussion time(which borders on teasing by the way) with him always leaves me thinking- which really works for me because I love, love, love to think. For a person like me, I continually experience the utmost, inexplicable love, favour, mercy, even protection of God and I’ve come to appreciate how God looks out for me. I do not claim to unde...

Arrivalism- the concept

Not too many things in life crack me up as much as the arrivalist. The embodiment of the concept is immaturely grown up that it puzzles me; the paradox that is arrivalism. Maybe before we go too far, let’s try and define this thing. My use of the word arrivalism in this article describes the mentality or false feeling of accomplishment or reaching the top of the road in a particular field. A case in point would be the upcoming musician whose music starts to enjoy massive airplay across media platforms or the socialite who starts getting noticed by and featured in tabloids. That sudden sense of accomplishment (adrenaline rush kind of thing), that gets to the head of the individual feeling it- that right there is arrivalism. When what should be a possible pit stop in life’s journey becomes the final destination because of pride( or as we’d say in Uganda ‘posing’). It really is just extreme pride in an achievement that is probably not that big a deal and more often t...

SOMNIAC!

There are so many sleep quotes out there that thinking of one to use was a whole other thing. I however remember one that used to amuse me terribly while I in school. Our Headmaster at the time had a famous scripture that was his motto for spurring kids to wake up for morning prep; Proverbs   6  Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. 7  Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, 8  she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. 9  How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? 10  A little sleep, a little slumber,     a little folding of the hands to rest, 11  and poverty will come upon you like a robber,     and want like an armed man. Of course at that age one wonders if reading at 6am was really that big a deal considering most people slept right through the prep. His emphasis was usually verse 10 but I enjoye...

Are you really who you are?

Everyone is worth something; believe it or not. It is imperative to know that, your worth is not attached to anything but rather what you believe. A lot of people go through life constantly attaching their worth to one thing or another because they don’t know how else to live. If it’s not one thing then it’s the other. I think association of worth to things or people is foundational in growth but mostly for children because it assists them in defining who they are by where they belong. Children own their parents and their parents achievements which is okay but once one is out of that phase, they must learn to stand on their own two feet. I believe that all behavioural patterns are in one way or the other tied to our need for belonging. Be it to a family, a peer group, a social class, religious group or even a facebook group. We have subconsciously been conditioned to believe that we must belong somewhere. Don’t get me wrong, belonging is a good thing but it should neve...

The Fight Within

My flesh, oh my flesh! Why dost thou plague me! There are days that my flesh goes on rampage and I mean RAMPAGE!!! On those days my flesh is convinced that it knows what’s best for me and overrides my mind. When the things my body feels flood my mind, it takes it upon itself to derive possible ways that my flesh can be satisfied. For the record, I am saved. The voices in my head push me to a place of indulgence and try as I may, I cannot seem to overcome this. Paul is so accurate when he says we are tempted by our own evil desires. A lot of that temptation comes from a secret place in my mind where a lot of evil desires are stashed. Desires that I cannot even admit to myself. I have started to realise that all the times I have fallen, it’s been because I feel like superwoman. “I’m too big for my body too control me. Temptation is for the weak!” (Insert laughing emoji). I am not strong! I am so weak and frail! I do not have the strength to overcome any tempt...

About Guardian Angels

This post is about a very special someone who has proved on more than one occasion to be a shoulder I can lean on with no judgement. Life has a way of causing our paths to cross with some of the most amazing and definitely also fake people. Today I write about someone who keeps teaching me, without even trying, the value of a friend. I won’t be so bold as to call him my best-friend so I’ll stick with guardian angel. I don’t know if you’ve ever had seasons where you don’t seem to understand yourself and you hardly would blame people for steering clear of you. Sometimes you even make it easier and stay away from them so they won’t have to feel obligated to carry your burden. Yeah. I know. That’s some very deep emotional ish. I have had seasons like that. See I’m not a crier and I’m not a person who looks for sympathy either. I have taught myself over the years to look out for me and deal with myself without necessarily drawing anyone in. So, one day a few years back, I met thi...
