'Could you please direct me to where the SK meet is
happening?'
'Just go past that
building; there's a tent just behind it' she said
It was 'Easter
Saturday', I honestly have no clue what the Saturday between good Friday and
Easter Sunday is called. So we'll just go with Easter Saturday.
Anyway, I made my way
along the uneven terrain to the tent. Yellow, orange and blue balloons with white
ribbons graced the tent. A beautiful face smiled at me welcoming me to the
meeting.
'Hi, my name is
Jessica' I said, smiling back
'I'm Agatha' she
responded
My eyes took in the
setting. Blue chairs made a circle around mats laden with mattresses; I could
already feel that warm fuzziness creep up on me. Yes, that fuzziness you feel
when you walk into your house after a really long day and you're just happy to
have a place to call home. This felt like home.
The ladies trickled
in slowly. I took mental note of each one even as they introduced themselves
and I couldn't help but feel grateful to be in the midst of Daughters of the
King. We were here to talk sex and dating; needless to say, the former excites
me to talk about!
'I think sex is overrated'
she said, as she went ahead to explain herself. I almost interjected then
thought about it and decided to wait my turn.
I have heard it said
before and I just did not bother to get into it then. But the more I think
about this statement, the less I agree with it. I quickly remembered something
that St. Augustine said 'Never judge a philosophy by its abuse.' We are very
quick to define things based on their abuse. What we however forget is that for
something to be abused, it must have an intended use!
When people say 'Sex
is overrated' it's because they never understood sex, let alone it's
purpose. Contrary to popular belief, I believe that sex God's way is
underrated. The maker of a thing, knows it's purpose and it's use but
we (in our fallenness) have taken a thing that is good and perverted it into an
ugly thing.
I believe, sex is
holy. Sex is sacred. Sex is beautiful. And sex has purpose;
1. Procreation (Gen 1:28)
Then
God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth
and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the
air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
2. Enjoyment
(Need I explain
this?)
3. Companionship and
intimacy (which some will also call worship). The kind of intimacy that comes
with sex should ideally leave one 'naked and unashamed' when enjoyed in the
context of marriage.
Gen 2
24 Therefore a man shall leave his
father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And they were
both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Again, popular belief
will say 'have sex with that special someone' but if you're like me, there have
been a few special someones in your life. And you did not marry any, let alone
all of them. So to this I say, 'have sex with no one except that person you get
married to' because that is the context in which sex should be had. (Paul
addresses this in his letter to the Church of Corinth)
1 Corinthians 7:2-3
Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have
his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 3 Let the husband
render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her
husband.
When we glorify the
abuse of a thing to be it's definition, we in essence are partakers in the
abuse. Maybe sex the world's way is overrated but sex God's way is really
underrated.
Galatians 5:18
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the
lust of the flesh. 17 For
the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these
are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are
led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery,[c] fornication,
uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions,
jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy,
murders,[d] drunkenness,
revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also
told you in time past, that those who practice such things
will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness,
self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who
are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the
Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another,
envying one another.
